Briefing: Magazine marketing and PR
Briefing: Magazine marketing and PR
TL;DR
The magazine needs a marketing and PR plan, but the plan depends on decisions only Sylvie and Rufus can make: how long the magazine runs, who it is for, and who gets free copies. We can start the work that doesn't depend on those answers: a list of critics and a look at past Instagram results. Sylvie and Rufus need to decide the rest.
What we need from you
- Uriel: read the plan below and tell me what I've got wrong or missed, before it goes to Sylvie.
- Sylvie: review the decisions list and the first ten critics once they're drafted.
What we know
- The current issue is Eternity. Sylvie plans about three more issues after it, then likely a stop.
- Promotion has stalled for about two months. Mythos had no sales in a week.
- OML handles shipping. Below ten copies a month, a €15 monthly fee applies.
- The magazine is not in the brand design system, and there is no press list or PR contact.
Decisions for Sylvie and Rufus
- Continuation: does the magazine run for about three more issues, or stop after Eternity? Does shipping cost make sense?
- Mission and audience: what is it for, and who is it for?
- Brand: should it be added to the design system, and has its role been written down anywhere?
- Visual direction: is the yellow uniform design a template, or the intended look?
- Free copies: is the aim press, relationships or influence, and who are the recipients?
Plan of work
- Turn the brainstorm into a plan and questions for Sylvie and Rufus. Fae, by 21 Oct.
- Check the plan with Uriel and get his input. Uriel.
- Bring the decisions list and the PR idea to Sylvie, with Rufus if needed. Fae.
- Draft a list of ten critics and tastemakers. Fae, then Sylvie to approve.
- Review past Instagram posts and set a baseline. Uriel.
- Agree the rollout once the content and decisions are known. Sylvie, Uriel and Fae.
Dates after step 1 are not set yet.
Where it stands (as of 19 Oct)
The plan is a draft. Owner and status are not yet confirmed. Nothing has been sent to the critics or shipped.
Open questions
- Who owns the magazine's marketing day to day?
- Which channels get the launch push: Instagram, Substack, or both?
- How much content exists for the Eternity launch?
