A repeatable way to publish a paper

We now have a standard way to take a white paper from finished text to a typeset PDF, a web edition and a launch, worked out on Wisdom and Wanting What's Good, Seeds of Renaissance No. 6.

  • One source, every output. The paper is written once in Markdown. The typeset PDF, the landing page, the full text on the web and the Substack post are all made from it, so a correction is one edit and a rerun.
  • A properly typeset PDF, built automatically: cover, title page, annotated contents, chapter openings with woodcuts, figures, and a back cover. It's hosted on our own site, so the link never changes.
  • Cover and promo images from one design: the A4 cover and square, portrait and landscape crops for social, all generated from the cover art.
  • Diagrams in a house style, signed so they stay attributed when shared alone, and set flush with the text in the PDF and on the web.
  • A house look for papers, set once in the Seeds of Renaissance design system, and a checklist anyone can follow for first release and re-release, with a short briefing for whoever runs the next paper.
